Popular free time activities…
Liwonde National Park
Most volunteers experience a safari to Liwonde National Park at some point during their time in Malawi. There is a wide variety of wildlife to enjoy and large herds of elephants. Take a vehicle safari, walking safari or boat safari to look for hippos and other animals along the river!

Cape Maclear
This is a popular tourist village at the edge of Lake Malawi. Cape Maclear is the perfect spot for snorkelling and boat rides on the lake and volunteers enjoy exploring the craft stalls and topping up their tans on the beach! Cape Maclear is also the best place to go for local nightlife, as there are a couple of lively bars to choose from in the evenings.

Zomba Plateau
Many volunteers head to the beautiful forest reserve of Zomba Plateau to relax in the cool forest, trek and horse ride.

South Luangwa National Park
For adventurous volunteers looking to explore a little more of Africa, there is an excellent opportunity to take a 3 or 4 day safari across the border to eastern Zambia to the beautiful wildlife haven of South Luangwa National Park. Wildlife includes an abundance of predators such as lions and leopards, giraffe, large herds of elephants, buffalo, crocodiles and hippos. This is a great safari to do after volunteering with us before returning home.

Camping on Domwe Island
Part of Lake Malawi National Park, Domwe Island is the largest unpopulated island in Lake Malawi. It is very popular with volunteers who come to the island for relaxing weekend camping trips; a true deserted island experience. Naturally Africa Volunteers enjoy a real diversity of activities during their stay, making Malawi a rewarding location both for the volunteer work and free time activities.
