Africa is renowned for its diverse and abundant wildlife and unrivalled National Parks, game reserves and vast wilderness areas. The conservation and management of these areas to protect habitats and the wildlife species that they support is of vital importance.
With the rate at which the human population is increasing in many African countries, the protected wildlife reserves are under ever increasing pressures. Traditional farming and other practices do not tend to be very sustainable; clearing land and exhausting resources. It is understandable that communities living in poverty use the available land and wildlife for food and to meet their needs. However, as human population density continues to increase, education about sustainable use of resources, management of the inevitable human-wildlife conflicts and ensuring local communities benefit from conservation is imperative to avoid species and habitat being lost forever.
Across Africa there are thousands of projects involved with the conservation and research of wildlife species and the ecosystems that they live in. Identifying a volunteer project that is right for you, has genuine conservation objectives and will actually benefit from you being there can be challenging. Wildlife conservation volunteering in Africa is often not glamorous and can be hard work at times. However, there are some major positives about these types of project. They are generally based in some of the most unspoilt and stunning natural areas in Africa and they get you behind the scenes of places that tourists will often pay large amounts of money to visit on holiday.
One quite simple question to ask yourself when choosing a wildlife conservation volunteer project is who, or what is going to benefit the most; you, or the wildlife! If the answer is very much you, then perhaps you need to give the project some careful consideration.
If you have relevant conservation experience or qualifications, or are looking for a project for an elective, or as part of your studies then please get in touch. We can organise individual placements at various projects.
The activities that you will be involved with as a volunteer will include beach patrols, research, education of the community about the importance of conservation, training and working alongside local guides on eco-tours and communication/interaction with tourists.
