If you have some extra time available at the end of your volunteer programme we strongly encourage you to travel and see a little more of what Africa has to offer.
Obviously we would like you to spend as much time as possible at your volunteer project, as you will get the most out of the experience and be of greatest assistance once you are fully settled in. It can take a little while to find your feet and feel like you are really achieving something. Therefore, we would generally not recommend spending less than 4 weeks at your project. Many volunteers think that this sounds a long time, but then as the fourth week draws to an end they wish they had longer.
On most projects you will also be able to travel and visit some of the local highlights at weekends. Your project co-ordinators will assist you with travel advice and at some projects will organise excursions for you as a group if you wish.
Having said all of this, Africa is a vast, scenically diverse continent with breathtaking wilderness and abundant wildlife. Some projects are in rural locations and so exploring at weekends can be challenging. Therefore, if you have a little time available at the end of your programme, we would highly recommend that you consider joining an organised tour for an African adventure and the perfect conclusion to your trip.
A few tour and travel ideas are described in these pages, but we can offer many others, from a few days to a few months, depending on your available time, interests and budget.
