TEFL Courses - teach English abroad

If you have limited or no teaching experience, assisting with lessons as a volunteer teacher in Africa can be very challenging.

Why do a TEFL Course?

A TEFL course will give you the additional confidence, ideas and basic skills to teach more effectively. Ultimately, this means that you will be of more value as a teaching volunteer and will find the whole experience more rewarding personally.

What will a TEFL course teach me?

You will already have knowledge of certain subjects, such as mathematics and science and in particular English, which will be of value. A TEFL course will teach you how to be creative to plan lessons and to get students interested in the topic that you are teaching with limited resources, such as books, stationery, and other teaching materials.

The course was very good indeed. The class was small (around 10 people) and intimate. Everyone had positive attitudes and eagerness to learn. Our teacher was very clear in his instruction, he drew a lot of discussion and participation from us throughout the 2 days and it helped us really learn new methods of teaching and organising the classroom. Overall a 10 out of 10 experience for me and I will use their techniques when I get into my first classroom”. – Jeff Chu

Weekend course
The weekend TEFL course is designed for the first time teacher. It covers all the basic principles of English Language Teaching in one fun weekend.

The course is quite participatory; so that you actually develop the skills and confidence required in a classroom environment, so don’t expect to sit quietly behind a desk for 20 hours.

A lot of content is covered during the weekend, so come prepared to learn a lot in a relatively short period of time. The course runs from 09.00 to 20.00 on Saturday and 09.00 to 18.00 on Sunday. The topics covered include:

  • Making introductions
  • Managing the classroom and students
  • Communication skills
  • Introduction to grammar
  • Role play and activities for interactive learning
  • Teaching every day English
  • Lesson planning and preparation
  • Assessing student ability
  • Correcting errors
  • Teaching reading and listening skills

Weekday Courses
The weekday TEFL courses are also intended for those with little or no teacher training or experience. The course covers the same principles of English Language Teaching as the weekend course, but spread over three days. This makes it a little less intensive then the weekend course.

As well as the modules covered in the weekend course you will:

  • Have three opportunities to deliver a lesson rather than two
  • Receive a 30-hour TEFL certificate
  • Cover the extra module of Teaching Young Learners

As with the weekend course, you will not just be sitting behind a desk for three days. In addition to learning the theory, you will have a chance to put it into practice, delivering your own lesson each day. For many students this is the most valuable part of the TEFL course, as it really gives you the opportunity to find out what teaching is like and to work on developing your teaching skills in a supportive and fun environment.

The 3-day courses run Monday to Wednesday, from 9am to 6pm. You will also be given a pre-course task that you can complete online. It will take you about 3 hours and will provide a gentle preparation to get you thinking about your course.
