Lake Malawi Teaching and Sports Volunteer Project

Your involvement as a sports volunteer extends further than encouraging and coaching sport alone; you will promote physical fitness and help develop life and social skills in a fun and supportive environment.

Incorporating Sport into your volunteering program is a great way to interact with the community, as it is an important part of the culture in Malawi.

Volunteering in the Lake Malawi Sports Volunteer Project requires you to participate in and lead sports coaching and training sessions with both school and local teams each afternoon to encourage involvement and the development of skills in different sports. Whether you are an experienced coach, skilled or simply enjoy playing sports, especially football, netball, volleyball or rounders, then you can contribute and there is the opportunity for you to become involved with this program. The Malawi Sports Volunteer Project is similar to the teaching project in that the volunteers assist with lessons at the primary school in the mornings, but rather than other extra-curricular activities you will focus specifically on sports coaching in the afternoons. It presents a fantastic opportunity to be involved and get to know those in the surrounding communities and build friendships with the locals.

Resources are limited for practising teams; however, this does not stop people from participating in Sports. Football matches are a common place in villages and the need for training and assistance is greatly appreciated amongst the players.

The social aspect of sports develops friendships and instils life skills, such as problem-solving, confidence and team building. Your responsibility in helping this happen will require organising weekly training sessions and games, which can also encourage time management and motivate those involved to feel they are part of something important. Your commitment and involvement in this project will encourage all those involved and increase participation, resulting in the benefits of activity and exercise being spread throughout the community for people of all ages.

If you are a committed and enthusiastic sports volunteer, you will not only benefit the children that you are coaching, but will have a genuinely rewarding personal life experience and we would welcome your involvement.
